A cyclic relay or cyclic time relay is used for periodically switching on electrical loads (e.g., lamps, fans, etc.) or for providing control signals in automatic monitoring or control systems (e.g., for switching on emergency flashing lights or an acoustic signal). This cyclic timer can be useful for organizing automatic ventilation processes, opening and closing windows, periodically switching on heating or ventilation, or rotating lighting or advertising signs.

If the relay is set so that its on and pause times are symmetrical, it can be used, for example, to gradually switch on certain electrical devices when current/power is limited (heaters, heat generators). The presence of a switching output contact allows the cycle to be triggered either in pulses or with a pause.
